Unlike head hair and eyebrow, the beard hair follicles and beard hair growth are largely propelled by testosterone hormone. The linear hair growth rate for the beards is determined by the amount of dihydrotestosterone, which is the byproduct of testosterone through the activation via enzyme in the hair follicles’ oil glands.

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is an androgen, they impact the scalp and beard differently. DHT are the main regulator of changes in hair growth. They promote the production of pigmented terminal hair and beard growth in men.

Both hair and beard follicles are sensitive to DHT, its well known that high levels of circulating androgens, including DHT, can shrink hair follicles as well as shorten the hair growth cycle, which then result in hair loss.

However, DHT exert an opposite on beard hair follicles. Beards possess androgen reception which makes them an androgen-dependent hair growth, the androgen act on epithelial hair follicle via mesenchyme-derived dermal papilla situated at the base of hair follicles. The dermal papilla is the main site of androgen action in the hair follicles it contains low capacity and high affinity androgen receptor.

Androgens stimulate the proliferation of keratinocytes and beard dermal papilla will produce androgen-dependent paracrine growth factors. Insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) was identified as one of the androgen-dependent paracrine growth factors which acts as the paracrine mediator from dermal papilla cells (DPC) to epithelial cells.

Androgents prolong the growth phase of beard hair and promote their conversion from vellus to terminal type. Since the beard hair growth is triggered and regulated by DHT, men with low androgenic hormones will not be able to grow thick and voluminous beard.
